The city of Novomoskovsk is in the Dnipropetrovsk region. During the Second World War, it was in the occupied zone together with the Dnepr River. Residents of the city felt the burden of the Nazi regime. On the territory of Dnepropetrovsk region ravaged 213 security division, which was subordinate to the commander of the rear area of the Army Group "South". From November 15, 1941 to March 1942 this division was commanded by the major of the German army Eckart von Tschammer und Osten, born in Dresden. The division consisted of two security regiments, one police battalion, a group of secret police - only about 4100 people.
In December 1941, the division developed an expedition plan to suppress a possible partisan movement in the Novomoskovsk forests along the Samara River. In January 1942, repressive units carried out an operation to destroy the partisans, which lasted several days. The units surrounded the forest from all sides to detect the enemy camp. As a result, about 100 Soviet partisans were killed. Fearing further resistance, the Nazis considered all men to be potential partisans.
In November-December 1941, when the division was in Novomoskovsk, in the courtyard of the Pedagogical Institute only on suspicion of possible involvement in the partisan movement, the Germans shot about a thousand civilians. My great-grandfather Siryachenko Ivan was shot at this place. He was arrested and killed, like many others, without trial or investigation. During the entire period of the occupation of Novomoskovsk (from September 27, 1941 to September 22, 1943), the Nazis took about 8,000 people to Germany, 2,000 of whom were under the age of 16. 3500 people (360 of them children) were shot. Before the seizure of the city, there were about 34,000 people living there. In March, the commander of the division Eckart von Tschammer und Osten was transferred to the post of commandant of the 392 main field commandant in Minsk. Already after the war, on January 29, 1946, he was hanged by the verdict of the military tribunal.
Nowadays, there is a collegium school № 11, where I had a chance to study on the place of the institute.
The plaque is located on the corner of the school building - Collegium No. 11 (GPS: 48°37'54.0"N 35°15'09.7"E). It was installed in the 1960s and has not changed since then. Size: 0.5 x 0.3 meters. Made of white stone. The following text is engraved on the board: “Here, in 1941-1943, the German occupiers carried out mass shootings of Soviet prisoners of war, partisans and civilians”. Previously, the plate was hanging on the corner of the building behind the fence. After a new commemorative plaque was hung under the plaque in 2014 to commemorate the soldiers killed in the 2014-2019 war in Donbas, a road was paved and a flower shelf was installed to access the two plaques. Nowadays, the plaques are a place of gathering of people and holding of memorial events on certain days. They are open at any time for those who want to put flowers, to honor the memory. It is worth noticing that the school has a small museum, where schoolchildren and all interested people can learn about the terrible events of the occupation of Novomoskovsk and the Nazi crime on school territory. The school administration takes care of the memorial plaque.
The memorial board is located at: Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk region, Novomoskovsk, Zelinskogo str., 5. It is located on the building of the school-collegium № 11, from the right corner of the outer side, near the side entrance. Access is free at any time.
The board was created at the initiative of the city authorities. The administration of School No. 11 is responsible for its preservation and taking care. Money for repair and renovation of the memorial was also allocated by the city authorities. If you wish, you can contact the administration of the school № 11 or the city authorities with a proposal for cooperation to improve the area around the monument.
